Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road - Wrong diagnosis and treatment

Abdul Hafeez filed complaint against Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road on Sep 6, 2024

My daughter had fever for * days and then it resolved but she continued to be weak and had body pains all over her body. After about a week, when she was still weak, I took her Fortis Hospital to consult our regular pediatrician. After evaluation, doctor suggested that she was dehydrated and the symptoms could be of post-viral and should resolve in a day or two and since it was more than a week, she ordered some blood tests and we came back home after submitting the blood to Fortis Lab (Agilus Diagnostic). By evening, my daughter was better and was playing around as usual. The blood reports were posted online and it showed very high hemoglobin and high RBC. As per the doctor's advise, I sent her the reports and called the doctor and doctor suggested that the issue is very serious and she needed ICU care and asked me to bring her to Emergency Department immediately. I reached the Fortis Emergency Department immediately and our pediatrician had already spoken to the intensivist, Dr Kuldeep, and on-call pediatric doctor evaluated my daughter in the emergency department and as per their advice admitted my daughter to ICU and treatment was started with IV antibiotics and other drugs. Blood was sent again for further investigation and surprisingly all the blood test came back normal this time. The hemoglobin value which showed ** which is very high earlier came back to **.* which was normal. The hospital tried their best to hush up the matter by suggesting because of their treatment the values came back normal which is impossible as the blood was withdrawn before the treatment was started and it is impossible for hemoglobin parameter to drop so much within such short period of time. However, since they had admitted the patient, they continued with the treatment and ordered further tests which all returned normal. I requested for discharge but doctor suggested we move to normal ward for one more day's observation and finish the IV antibiotic course. Since my daughter was covered under Care Health insurance, a pre-authorization had been submitted but they did not approve it requesting the etiology for such a high hemoglobin in the first report. The lab did not have an answer for that and they tried to manipulate the report by adding a comment the next day saying sample was not proper and repeat advised. After I presented them with all the facts, they finally agreed to give a letter to insurance stating the first report was probably an error report but still my daughter needed the treatment based on her symptoms. Since hospital could not give a single report or treatment chart where it suggested my daughter was sick to be admitted, the insurance finally declined the cashless claim and the hospital held me hostage to pay the bill. We were kept in the hospital for a further ** hours without discharge assuring me they are resolving the issue and nothing will be charged to me. After talking to all their seniors and the doctors and lab head, they concluded that yes it was their lab's mistake but still insisted that I pay the bill. The bill initially for insurance was Rs. ***** but they later changed it to Rs. **,*** and insisted I pay the entire money. After I denied it, they finally made the bill for Rs. **,*** and I had to pay the amount as they were not leaving my family out of the hospital. It was a very traumatizing experience for my family especially as my *-year-old daughter was involved. I want to bring this to notice of all the people so that big hospitals like this should not cheat people and should be held liable for their mistakes. I have all the evidences to prove each and every scenario including letters written by the hospital on their mistakes.
