Hathway broadband chennai - Harrassment by saying to submit device with legal notice

I have received an email saying to submit the device or else am liable to pay a certain amount (**** rs) else they would send a legal notice. I have discontinued their service on February **** as I moved out of the city but they never came to recover the device. I no longer have the device. I was willing to pay the said charges but I wanted to make sure if it's genuine or Am I getting scammed in anyway by some recovery agents. I had used their prepaid plans and I had paid the initial setup charges including the price of modem. I am not sure if again I need to pay for it.
If it is not genuine, I would like to get an apology from the company and stop getting such calls and emails representing that company.
