Air india - Date Change Penalty

The issue that I have experienced was: My original date of return was on *th March ****. But Air India canceled the flight and gave me a date of **st March ****. Thus I called Air India executive and told them I was not comfortable with the date change and they changed it to **th March ****. Now on **th March, my Dad got COVID, so I asked Air India to make my ticket open as I didn't know when I would be able to return. I asked the Air India representative multiple times whether I would be charged a date change penalty when I book my next flight using this open ticket and I was confirmed every time by the Air India Customer Care person that I would not have to since * date change is allowed.
