Goa Medical College
- Medical negligence Open
Joanna Coelho filed this complaint against Goa Medical College on May 22, 2023
My father was admitted to the CCU *** of GMC on the night of ** February ****. The following instances of medical negligence was observed by me prior to his death at * am on ** February ****:
*) A procedure of temporary pace maker was done to my father by the resident doctor, Dr Tejas Borker. My father was given a bottle in which his urine sample was to be collected. He was told to either urinate in the bottle or go to be toilet and urinate. Despite requesting Dr Tejas and the staff five times, a cathether was not provided to my father. Conscientious that the urine sample had to be collected, my father tried at least three times to stand up and force himself to urinate into the bottle. This effort put a pot of pressure on my father, especially given the various tubes that he had.
*. My father was not given a hospital gown. So everytime he had to try to urinate or get himself ready for check up etc, he had to negotiate shirt, banyan, underwear, trousers belt etc. This added to the strain on himself.
*. Dr Borker was extremely rude and intimidating the entire night. He was not at all approachable to even clear out basic doubts. Even the junior doctor and nurses were afraid of him. At one point when I enquired with the junior doctor whether my father could be given a catherer, she told me to ask Dr Tejas. When I told her I did not find him so approachable, she shared with me that she faced the same issue. When his pulse was dropping to dangerous levels and I informed the nurse, she was hesitant to call Dr Tejas. When she finally went to call Dr Tejas, I stood near his door and as he was taking time to come I entered the corridor, but afraid of him I quickly returned. When he came out he told me very sternly that I should not enter his room under any circumstances. I would like to add here that, at this point my father's pulse was dropping to dangerous levels while Dr Tejas lectured me on not entering his room.
*. During the night at one point when Dr Tejas came to check on my father with the stethescope, he made my father sit up and asked him to take a deep breath. As my father couldn't take a deep breath, given his heart condition and the fact that he was tied up to machines, Dr Tejas fired my father for not being able to take a deep breath. TO see my mild father being treated so insensitively and cruelly by Dr Tejas was very disturbing for me. But as we are at the Doctor's mercy, I had to keep quiet.
* The nurses at the CCU were also sleeping the entire night resting their head on the table. We had to wake them up and request them to attend to my father.
* I had the feeling that as it is a free hospital we were at the mercy of th charity of the nurses and doctors. But we were at GMC because the *** ambulance does not take a patient to a private hospital. Secondly, as tax paying citizens, it is the duty of the doctors and nurses of GMC to attend to us. Through our taxes, we also contribute to subsidized education of the doctors training at GMC
