Electricity is one of the greatest gifts to mankind. Nowadays, it is required for all purposes and without which our lives would be nearly impossible. All the houses in India are equipped with a meter which generates every month’s bill. We pay the amount as per the meter reading to the government every month for unlimited usage of electricity.
However, many times people have complained that their electricity bill was generated twice as high. There have been many incidents regarding the same where the electricity bill of people has been more than 1 crore and for which they have gone to court and their cases are still pending.
The most common electricity complaints made by consumers include:
- Wrong bill issued
- Electricity was disconnected
- Electricity load not given as per rule
- Frequent power cuts etc.
So what should a consumer do if he has electricity complaint especially electricity bill complaint?
First and foremost we should calculate the units consumed in the bill and compare it with the previous months unit. If the unit are round about the same it means that the costs might have gone up.
Secondly if you find out that this unit is quite different from the units of the previous months you should check the meter reading. Since the meter reading is done manually there is less margin for error. Once you have done the above mentioned steps try closing the power mains and see if the meter dial moves or not, because, if it does then it indicates a broken meter.
Also, you should check if any other wires that don’t belong to you are connected to your meter. This is quite prevalent in India and is known as ‘Electricity Theft’.
Finally, check the wiring in your house and if it seems old it maybe time to be replace it with a new one as it will cause leakages. If on carrying out the above mentioned steps you still can’t find any abnormality then you should file a complaint at your Electricity Department and tell them about the electricity bill issue.
For frequent power cuts and electricity being disconnected altogether you should file a complaint at your Electricity Department too. However, if they are unwilling to resolve the issue in, both the cases, you will have to file a complaint at the nearest Consumer Forum. We at Voxya help in approaching the consumer forum by sending legal notice and preparing the case documents. File a Complaint today!
