Kashmir Treks failed to disclose the critical fact that the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek was closed, yet still proceeded with our booking and collected full payment. Had they been honest, we would not have cancelled the trip. They only informed us at the last minute, forcing us to accept their “alternative trek,” which itself proved unfeasible. After wasting days, we were pushed into an “alternative of the alternative,” which was no true trek at all but merely a short day-hike route.
During this period, the equipment and food provided by Kashmir Treks were the worst we have ever experienced. Because of unsuitable tents and poor gear, we lost valuable trekking time, suffered threats to our health and safety, and endured severe hardship.
Not only did we miss the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek we had planned, but we instead experienced a near-traumatic trip. Meanwhile, Kashmir Treks clearly reduced their own costs and thereby increased profits by:
*. Using luggage horses only once, instead of throughout the *-day trek;
*. Failing to provide a dedicated guide for the entire itinerary;
*. Substituting the Srinagar houseboat stay with a basic homestay in Inshan;
*. Providing extremely basic meals rather than proper trekking food;
*. Supplying old, unsafe, and unsuitable equipment instead of weather-appropriate gear;
*. The cost of the latter part of the trip abandoned by one member.
In conclusion, we paid for a trek that should never have taken place, and instead lost money, time, and health while enduring both physical and psychological suffering. One member lost additional expenses by abandoning the latter half of the trip altogether due to the unbearable conditions.
