My Dell Inspirion Gaming **** stopped turning on at the end of May. There was no prior symptom and I had not made any modification recently to the hardware or software. The diagnosis was unsurprisingly that the power supply portion of the motherboard had malfunctioned. The device is out of warranty so I was willing to pay any reasonable repair cost. Here is what happened -
*. May ** - Laptop stops working.
*. May ** - Laptop sent to a local "Dell Service Centre".
*. May ** - "Service centre" returned the laptop saying it is unrepairable and spares are unavailable. Requested for confirmation of the same on mail was denied. Received the diagnosis of malfunctioning motherboard.
*. May ** - Contacted Dell customer service. Aside from the usual customer service shenanigans, the representative was helpful and diagnosed the same problem with the motherboard. He mailed a quote for replacement of motherboard for **k, pre-paid with a *-week turn over time and on-site service.
*. June - The quote by Dell seemed high especially since it was pre-paid and the turnover time was high. So I sent the laptop to an independent repair shop I trusted where it remained for the month. Received the same diagnosis but unfortunately, the shop was unable to source another motherboard. No procedures were performed on the device.
*. July * - Contacted the same Dell representative again for a refreshed quote. He gave me the same quote for **k, CONFIRMED AVAILABILITY OF THE PART and assured me that if this problem occurs again my part cost would be refunded.
*. July * - Had a few conversations with the representative over a few days. Representative sent details for the legit service centre in my city as I did not want unnecessary house visits during covid.
*. July ** - Sent my laptop to the service centre given by the Dell Customer Service. Received service job sheet confirming payment of Rs.*** as service cost.
*. August ** - Had been calling the service centre twice a week to know the status of the service. Was always given some excuse like "Dell is not responding to the request", etc. After almost a month, sent a peon to the service centre, they told him that the service procedure had not begun due to lack of payment even though we had the job sheet confirming that payment had been made. Sorted this issue and repair began.
**. August ** - Service centre contacted us and refused to repair citing unavailability of parts even though DELL HAD CONFIRMED THE AVAILABILITY BEFOREHAND.
Now, I am without my primary work device for * months. The new semester is completely online and I have various commitments for which I need my laptop.
