Sathish Subramanian filed this complaint against Kauvery Hospital Chennai on Nov 20, 2019
Kauvery Hospital charged us Rs. **,*** for an elbow dislocation. Yes, you heard it right. It was a **-minute procedure to fix the dislocation, there was no operation. Here is how it happened.
My wife fell off her vehicle in front of a shop when she was trying to turn the vehicle preparing to leave after her purchases. She landed on her elbow and there was dislocation. She was in extreme pain, so we have to take her quickly to a hospital. We found Cauvery close by and we went into the emergency ward of the hospital at about *.** pm. There were a bunch of nurses who asked several questions and asked us to fill out a form. I told them to attend to my wife fast as she was reeling with pain but they kept insisting on filling out the details as they need to follow a ‘process’.
Finally, after about ** minutes an orthopedic doctor came and asked the nurse to get a paracetamol injection. And then they took her to the X-ray room and got the X-ray done at around *.** pm. They said that X-Ray clearly a dislocation. So they arranged for an anesthesiologist and took her to the operation theatre. She gave anesthesia and the dislocation was fixed by *.** pm. Another X-Ray was taken at around *.** pm which we did not get to see till the next day.
We’re told that the doctor would look at the second X-Ray and let us know if the bone is in place now. The doctor never showed up. Meanwhile, we were asked to get admitted for the night as she apparently had to be put under observation as she was prone to asthma.
We moved to the room around *.** pm. The per-day room rent was *,***/- for a private room. We asked the nurses if the doctor had seen the second X-Ray. They said the doctor was not reachable and we have to wait till next day morning for the duty doctor to see it. The next morning the duty doctor who visits all the in-patients saw the X-Ray at around *.** am and told us everything looked fine and we can settle the bill and leave.
We waited for the hospital to prepare the bill We waited and waited. Finally, at around noon we were called to do the payment. I went to the IP payment room and I was shocked when the cashier gave the invoice for Rs. **,***/- I argued why would a dislocation cost so much? I even told them I don't have an insurance cover. The cashier asked me to contact the next person who sits behind him. He said he would talk to the manager and let me know. I waited. After ** minutes he called me and said my bill was reduced to Rs. **,***/- I said this is ridiculous. They refused to reduce the bill any further.
I couldn’t bear staying in this hospital any longer. We packed our bags and left at around *.** pm.
I would like to share this with doctors and get their opinion. Will a fix for elbow dislocation and one night stay at the hospital cost Rs. **,***/-? Looking at the split, Rs. **,***/- was for the surgeon. There was no surgery. I don’t know what surgeon they are talking about. Rs. **,***/- was for anesthesia. Around Rs. *,***/- for the room. Another **,***/- for other charges which include consumables.
