BMW
- Car s engine failed due to manufacturing defect by manufacturer and poor workmanship by the dealersh Open
Abhinav Kumar filed this complaint against BMW on Feb 16, 2024
My BMW X* car's engine has failed after the EGR recall. This recall was for a manufacturing defect identified by BMW in my batch of cars. During this recall work, the dealership has also changed engine parts like cylinder head gasket & timing chain along with the defective EGR module which scorched holes into the inlet manifold. These works were done after BMW sent a recall letter. In that recall letter, BMW mentioned that my car has been running with a faulty EGR since it's inception and that it has been slowly eating up my car's internal components. All the symptoms like coolant low warnings and overheating had been showing up in my car before the faulty parts were changed. The fact that BMW only realized after * years that my car had this manufacturing defect, it had overheated the engine and other components for so long and for so many times, that soon after the recall work at the dealership, my car's engine failed on a highway. It was the first time after that recall service when I was driving my car at a high RPM/ speed and it took just moments and a few KMs to show the affect of what the internal engine parts had been going through all these years. Rod bearing & crankshaft of *rd cylinder were the ones which failed, which are the internal engine parts. With my trust in the brand, I was keeping my calm until BMW started taking an unexpected stand and refusing to accept the impact of their manufacturing defects to the engine and rather sent me an estimate of over **.* lakh Rupees for the repair asking me to pay for it. My car has just **K km on odometer and there is no chance of the engine failing at such a low mileage without having a manufacturing defect or a human error while working on my engine head by the dealership during the last visit. All they are trying is to blame my service history, even when last two years' services has been done at BMW authorized dealerships itself, and same for initial * years of the car's life. It's just during the peak covid years in between (****-**) when the then owner had to service it outside with no choice in lockdown (nearest BMW dealership was ****km). BMW is just ignoring technical facts and misleading the situation. Effect of a faulty EGR on an engine for straight * years and chance of a human error by their dealership while working on my car's engine has way more chance of damage THAN a maintenance service done outside *-* years back. The failure soon after the car was worked upon by the dealership can also not just be a co-incidence. Adding to the problem was their Vizag dealership who couldn't identify at the right time that the drained coolant reported by me while I was enroute to Bangalore (from Ranchi- a trip of ****+ KM) and rather recommended me to continue driving to Bangalore which was ****+ km far from that dealership in Vizag, by only toping up the coolant and charging me rather than finding the root cause then and there of the coolant getting drained (which was later found to be caused by the defective EGR).
